What is the Role of an Appropriate Body?

All schools employing Early Career Teachers (ECTs) are required to register them with an Appropriate Body (AB) throughout their induction period. The Appropriate Body plays a vital role in ensuring induction is delivered effectively, fairly and in line with statutory requirements.

The Appropriate Body has two key responsibilities:

Supporting High-Quality Induction

Monitoring and quality assuring the induction process to ensure ECTs receive their full statutory entitlement and that schools are supported to deliver a high-quality, Early Career Teacher Entitlement (ECTE) aligned induction programme.

Quality Assurance of Assessment

Reviewing assessment outcomes and making the final decision on whether an ECT has successfully met the Teachers’ Standards, based on the Headteacher’s recommendation and evidence gathered throughout the induction period.

What Our Schools Say About Us

“A helpful visit which gave reassurance that our current processes are correct and supportive and following the relevant guidelines and which gave us ideas on how we could improve our provision for ECTs further.“

Induction Tutor Visit Evaluation
“Cara was great as usual and her support and professionalism was really helpful for myself and the Associate Teacher. This was very professional, while feeling supportive and we were all put at ease.  It felt like a constructive conversation.“
Mentor and ECT Evaluation
“The information provided before was really useful as was the time to plan out the morning so that cover and organisation of the visit was simple. The event was well organised and I feel we had ownership of shaping the visit. “
